Referendum would have allowed students choice between ethics or religious education

BERLIN
In a referendum last week, voters in Berlin rejected a proposal to let the city's schoolchildren take religious instruction instead of mandatory ethics classes.

As a result, the current ethics education course will remain unchanged in Berlin, reports Deutsche Welle. Students will take the mandatory ethics course and then add religion courses if they choose.

Ethics courses have been required in Berlin schools since 2006, but in much of the rest of Germany, students can choose between religion and ethics, according to the BBC.  view more>>>
