Civil Rights: Laws or Morality
by Anne Fiedler, PhD
Core Values
Integrity: Standing up for your beliefs about what is right and what is wrong and resisting social pressure to do wrong. If someone really had integrity, would they stand up if they witnessed someone being discriminated against because of their race, gender, religion, of ethnic background?
Respect: Showing regard for the worth and dignity of someone or something, being courteous and polite, and judging all people on their merits. It takes three major forms: respect for oneself, respect for other people, and respect for all forms of life and the environment. When you act in a prejudicial manner, just because someone is different from you, are you being respectful?
Responsibility: Thinking before you act and being accountable for your actions, paying attention to others, and responding to their needs. Responsibility emphasizes our positive obligations to care for each other. Before you act in a certain way isn't it responsible to examine your own motives and to be sure that your actions are based on logical reasoning and not on prejudice?
